Amal El-Mohtar: The River Has Roots

Őszinte leszek. Ezt a könyvet nagyrészt azért olvastam el, hogy teljesítsek Goodreads-en egy Pride Month kihívást. Meg persze úgy gondoltam, a kissé visszás érzelmeket maga után hagyó This Is How You Lose the Time War után adok egy esélyt szólóban is a szerzőpáros egyik tagjának.

Határozottan hordozott magán ez a könyv is a korábban olvasottra jellemző stílusjegyeket. Azonban sokkal könnyebben értelmezhető ez a szöveg, annak ellenére, hogy jóvall líraibb a másiknál. Meglepetésemre le is kötött. Vártam, hogy tovább olvashassam, és kíváncsi voltam, hová fut ki a történet. Hát, ezt a kifutást nem nagyon tudom hová tenni, akkor sem, ha értem, mi és miért történt.

Amit nem értek, az az, hogy ezzel a történettel mi volt az író célja, mit akart valójában közölni vele. Mert ennek a könyvnek igazából nincs vége, csak egy ponton félbe szakad. A morális mondanivalója világos, de a filmszalagszakadás-szerű befejezés sokat rontott az amúgy nagyon tetszetős összképen.

Összességében nagyon szerettem ennek a könyvnek a stílusát, és még a mondanivalója is megpengetett bennem rokon húrkat, de a vége számomra rendkívül kusza. A pluszban közölt novelláskötet egy darabja azonban felkeltette az érdeklődésemet, úgyhogy valószínűleg nem most olvastam a szerzőtől utoljára.

5/4 - De csak azért, mert nagyon hirtelen lett vége, és befejezetlenség érzést hagyott bennem maga után.

I will be honest. I read this book mostly because I wanted to complete a Pride Month Challenge on Goodreads. And if I was at it, I thought I should give another chance to the author after the not so good, certainly don't worth the hype experience 'This Is How You Lose the Time War' gave me. 

I could detect the way of writing all right. And honestly this text was easier to understand despite the fact that this was much more lyrical than the first book I've read from the author. Surprisingly, I really liked this story. I could hardly wait to pick it up again and continue reading. I wished to know what would be the conclusion of the whole situation described. And man... what a disappointment. I mean I do understand, what happened and why it happened but talking about an anticlimatic conclusion...

I don't really know what she wanted to express with this story. What was the reason she wrote it? Because this book doesn't really have and end. It just stopped happening suddenly. I get the moral of the story. I really do. And I appreciate it even. But this kind of an ending was bad for the story. Plain and simple. 

All in all I loved the style of the writing. And the moral of the story settled deep within me. But the ending was way too sudden. I loved the short story from her collection though, so I might read one more of her works sometime in the future.
