Én tényleg nagyon szeretem Radnótit, ezt le kell szögeznem. Ezzel az írásával azonban még az elfogultságommal együtt sem tudtam igazán mit kezdeni. Maga a törzsszöveg is elég zavaros volt, leginkább össze csak félig-meddig függő jelenetek sora. Ezt a függelék még tovább bonyolította, majd az utószó adott rá némi magyarázatot, feloldást. 

Ha nem egy kerek prózai műként, hanem tényleg epizódokként és átvezetésekként nézem a szöveget, akkor elém tárul egy tragikus gyermekkor és a körülményekkel, a bűntudat terhével vívódó felmőttkor. Az, ahogy Radnóti gyermekkorában elvesztette apját, majd azzal is szembesülnie kellett, hogy a nő, akit anyaként, és Ági, akit testvérként szeretett nem vér szerinti rokona, illetve féltestvére, az nagyon mélyen megérintett. Ugyanakkor a felnőtt életből vett jelenetek, az Eduárd-epizód, a párizsi utak, vagy éppen Fanni féltő gondoskodása kicsit összezavarta a fejemben az idősíkokat.

Szóval ez a mű még nem állt össze a fejemben teljes mértékben, emiatt úgy érzem, értékelni sem tudom annyira, és úgy, amennyire és ahogy megérdemelné. Nem kizárt az sem, hogy nem a legmegfelelőbb pillanatban vettem le a könyvet a polcról. Mindenképpen megpróbálkozom vele később még egyszer legalább. Addig pedig iparkodom neki megtalálni a helyet a lelkemben.

You know I'm always happy to recommend some highly praised Hungarian literature which happen to be available in English. The author of this book is my favourite Hungarian poet so of course I come and try to push his art under your noses. 

But I have to admit something. Yes I do love Radnóti. Yes I am awfully biased when it comes to him. But I had some trouble wrapping my head around this piece, not gonna lie. It was a bit all over the place as a full text. Just a series of not entierly coherent scenes from an extraordinary life. The appendix just made it even more complicated and the afterword gave us some explanation.

If I don't examine this piece as a coherent text only as episodes and bridges, I got a slice of an extraordinary life. A childhood full of loss and an adulthood driven by guilt. It deeply touched me. The way he wrote about how he lost his father when he was a child. How he figured out that the woman who he thought was his mother and the girl who he thought was his sister were not his blood relative and was his half-sibling. In the meantime the scenes from the adulthood, the Eduard-episode, their trips to Paris and Fanni's role as his wife mixed up the timline of this book for me a bit. 

So, I have to say I could not put this one together in my head yet, and that's why I feel like I can't appreciate this book as much as I could or should. It's possible that I took it off my shelf at a wrong time, So I will definitely give it at least one more chance later. Until then, I'll try to find its place in my soul.
