These were my first shy steps into Grishaverse, since I'm determined to get to know it. Thanks to the Netflix series, I have seen so many people reading the books and instantly fall in love with them, that I thought, I needed to know what's so great in this universe.
I thought it wouldn't be a bad idea keeping up with the chronology, and start my journey with this side short story. I was right, though. It absolutely was not a bad idea. It's kind of a miracle but these less than 70 pages showed me a world, which bewitched me right away. Since it was "just" a side short story originally, I was afraid it would be some kind of an in medias res. I thought the author had presumed the curious reader would know the world and the characters in the story. Thank God that was not what really happened.
Truth to be told, the whole story was not a bit heart-wrenching. It was about a little boy, who is special even among the special, and his skills need to be kept as a secret. Otherwise the greedy crowd would go out there and hunt him down. Plain and simple. Mark my word.
This feeling of "I don't belong anywhere" in the little boys life truly touched me pretty deeply. He couldn't, he wouldn't even try to create bonds with other people like him. Since he needed to be flexible like shadows in all his life. Ironically it seemed he could control the shadows.
On the other hand there were the bond based on pure love between the boy and his mother. His mother who could do literally anything to protect her child. Who else can a child count on if not his own mother and her love?

I have to confess. Even though the hard and dark feelings which traded through the whole short story, this book truly bewitched me and I'm so curious to know what's gonna happen in the upcoming short stories and novels. I sincerely hope it won't lose the factor of magic, because it really was pulling me into this universe.
