Alice Oseman: I Was Born for This

Idén úgy tűnik párosával fogyasztom Alice Oseman könyveit. Az év legelején a Solitaire után a Heartstopper 5. kötete, most pedig a Radio Silence újraolvasása után egyből az I Was Born for This került terítékre.

Valójában az egyik következett a másikból. A Radio Silence hangulata és írásmódja annyira magával ragadó volt, hogy szerettem volna még abban a burokban maradni, amit Alice könyvei jelentenek számomra. Egy burokban, ahol korántsem minden probléma mentes, sőt nagyon komoly dolgok kerülnek rendre felszínre mind az egyén, mind a társadalom szintjén. Azonban ebben a burokban, amit ezek a könyvek teremtenek, soha nincs egyedül, nem marad magára az ember a megoldandó problémáival. Láttatva és látva, megértve és elfogadva érzi magát. Ebbe pedig bele tartozik az érzékkel és jó szándékkal megírt reprezentáció is.

Ebben a könyvben váltott szemszögben követhetjük nyomon két karakter különös módon összefonódó sorsát. Az egykük Angel Rahimi egy értelmiségi családból származó muszlim lány, akinek életét egy tinédzser fiúkból álló banda a "The Ark" tartja össze. Fangirlnek lenni jelenti számára az élet alfáját, és omegáját. Egyenesen úgy érzi, az ágyból sem tudna felkelni, ha nem lenne a banda.

A másik szemszög tulajdonosa Jimmy Kaga-Ricci a "The Ark" frontembere. Egy szorongásos pánikbetegséggel küzdő fiatal transz férfi, akinek az életére elviselhetetlen súlyokat halmoz a korai életkorban megtapasztalt világhírnév.

Kettejükön keresztül nagyon sok mindenbe bepillantást nyerhetünk. Angel karaktere egy tiszta tükör arra vonatkozólag, hogy nem egészséges egyvalamire ráfixálva élni az életünket. Jó dolog a rajongás, és valóban rengeteg hullámvölgyön átsegíti az embert. Azonban nem szabad elfelejteni, hogy a rajongók között talált barátaink is igazi emberek a saját élttörténetükkel. Amit jó esetben kölcsönösen kibontakoztathatunk. Illetve idővel akarva-akaratlan szembe kell nézni a ténnyel, hogy a feltételezések, amelyekben az alapján hiszünk, amit látunk, nem mindig bizonyulnak igaznak.

Jimmy életét pedig éppen ezek a folytonos hazugságok, tettetések teszik a siker, a hírnév és a barátai ellenére egyre nehezebbé. Szerintem nagyon szépen van ábrázolva az ő karakterében sok minden. Először is, hogy bizony a siker és csillogás árnyoldalakkal és gyakran aránytalan áldozatokkal jár. Ugyanakkor a karaktere emeli be a történetbe mindazt, amit a bejegyzés elején említettem a burokról. Jimmy jelenti a történetben a reprezentációt, és azt is, hogy a problémákkal sokkal könnyebb szembe nézni, ha az ember nincs egyedül. Mert sok mindent lehet mondani, de azt nem, hogy ez a három srác ne támogatná egymást.

Mikor befejeztem a történetet erősen gondolkodtam rajta, hogy megemlítsem-e bármilyen érintőlegesen is a valóságtól néha elrugaszkodott, olykor mozifilmbe illő jeleneteket. Úgy döntöttem, nem rugózom rajta. Mert van itt millió más sokkal fontosabb boncolgatni való. Ezek a jelenetek pedig kellettek ahhoz, hogy a tanulság útja megfelelően kiépüljön.

Most nem méláznék azon sem konkrétan, hogy kinek ajánlanám ezt a könyvet. Csak annyit mondok, hogy olvassatok Alice Oseman-t. Akármit, mindegy mit, de olvassatok tőle. Remélem, fogunk még az ő tollából hasonló értékes történeteket látni a jövőben.

5/5 - Elsőre olvasás közben talán fel sem tűnik, mekkora érték ez a könyv. Pedig ugyanolyan kincs, mint az összes többi műve.

It seems like this year I consume Alice Oseman's books in pairs. At the beginning of the year there were Solitaire and Heartsopper Vol 5. right after each other, and now here we have I Was Born for This right after I reread Radio Silence.

Truth to be told I just couldn't help myself. I wanted to stay in the protected space Alice's books always cover me with. I wanted to stay at a place where nothing is problem free because the characters always deal with serious problems both on the level of an individual and on the level of society, and yet I always feel protected and I always feel seen. I wanted to stay somewhere I never feel alone. Thanks to the always flawless attempts of representation.

In this book there is a switched POV. Two characters whose journey unexpectedly lead them to each other. One of them is Angel Rahimi. A girl whose parents are both teachers but she doesn't really care about her academical achievements. The sole purpose of her life is a teenage boyband, "The Ark". Being a fangirl determines her own life. According to her the band keeps giving her reason to get out of bed every morning. 

The other POV belongs to Jimmy Kaga-Ricci, the frontman of "The Ark". A trans young man who's battling with severe anxiety and panic attacks. He is young, in his teens and his fame puts a way too heavy burden on his shoulders to carry.

Thanks to these characters we get to see many things during our journey with them. Angel's character is a clear mirror in which we can see that's not healthy to center our life around one single thing. Trust me, being a fangirl is a damn great thing most of the time. It has helped me through many hardships in my life. But when we find friends in fandom, we should not forget that they are real people as well with their own life, their own story which is probably more than just being a fangirl. We should cherish these friendships as they are. Not to mention that the time will come when you will be forced to realize that not everything you see is true. 

Jimmy's life gets harder and harder exactly because he needs to live in the middle of these lies and acts every day. Despite the fame, the success and the company of his closest friends. I think his character is nicely layered and he represents many things in story. First of all that success and fame have their own price, and this price is too big to pay, more often than not. Second of all that he brings everything in the story I mentioned at the beginning of this entry. He provides the representation. And he proves that it's easier to cope with the problems if you are not alone. We can say many things about these boys but they are there for each other.

When I finished this story I considered mentioning the fact that some place or other it's a bit hard to believe. Like there are some sub plotlines which made me feel like I was watching a movie. But I decided I wouldn't stay at this topic too long because there are so many other more important plotlines to unpack here. This story simply needed those sub-plotlines for the message to get delivered. 

I don't even want to recommend this book particularly to anyone. The important thing is that you should pick up and read an Alice Oseman book. No matter what you read from her but you should read something. I hope she will give us such gems like this in the future.
