Jake Adelstein: The Last Yakuza - Life and Death in the Japanese Underworld

Néhányatok még talán emlékszik rá, pár évvel ezelőtt milyen mély benyomást tett rám a Tokyo Vice olvasása. Valahogy tiszteletet ébresztett bennem egyrészt maga a mondanivaló másrészt maga az írásmód. Lehengerlő volt. Alapos, mégsem száraz, és tudományos. Gondolatébresztő. Kifejezetten olyan könyv, ami szélesíti az olvasó látókörét. Mindeközben pedig az ember érzelmeit sem hagyja kifejezetten érintetlenül. Aztán persze jött a sorozat és a podcast, de azok egy teljesen másik történethez tartoznak. amiről valamikor talán még írni is fogok egy újabb gondolatfolyamot.

Most szigorúan a könyveknél maradva nem volt kérdés, hogy szükséges a sajátomnak tudnom egyet ebből a kötetből is. Igaz, jó sokáig tartott, mire levettem a polceól, ahogy az is, hogy elolvassam. A The Last Yakuza egy olyan könyv, amin nem lehet csak úgy átszáguldani, félvállról venni. Erre figyelni kell, ezt értelmezni kell, ezen bizony gondolkodni kell.

Talán nem lepek meg senkit azzal, ha azt mondom, padlót fogtam erről a könyvtől. A létező legjobb értelemben. Van ebben a könyvben minden. Történelem, értékek, szabályok, rendszer. És nem utolsó sorban egy ember élettörténete. A maga hullámhegyeivel és hullámvölgyeivel, barátokkal és ellenségekkel, és mindazzal ami ezt a bizonyos sorsot motiválta és formálta.

Ezt észreveni azonban kemény munka. Figyelmet és nyitottságot igényel. Már csupán az is, hogy a yakuza, a tulajdonképpeni bűnöző és gengszter mögött, vagy éppen mellett meglássuk az embert. 

Nekem személy szerint ez jelentette a legtöbbet, amellett, hogy a sorok mögött az író hangját véltem hallani olvasás közben. Szerény véleményem szerint most is egy nagyon sok rétegű történettel lettünk gazdagabbak. 

Kifejezetten ajánlom mindenkinek, akit érdekel a téma. A japán alvilág története és alakulása, valamint kiemelkedően egy személy a rendszerben. Számomra nagyon érdekes olvasmány volt.

Some of you might remember how obsessed I was back then with Tokyo Vice (the book). I somehow respected both the moral of the book and the way the story was told. It put me on the edge of my seat. It floored me, it did ground me. That book was detailed and yet not a dry and scietific or historical book. It was made to widen the readers' POVs and interests. And it punched right in the middle of the feels as well. Just like this book. There were of course the series and the podcast. But those are totally different stories. I might cover them in some other entries. 

Speaking of the books only. It was not a question, I wanted to own a copy of this one as well. It took me quiite a long time to pick it off the shelf and start to read it and also quite a long time to finish it. The Last Yakuza is not an easy read to say the least. But it's totally worth it! It's something everyone should pay attention to, something everyone should try to understand. Something everyone should think about. 

It may not be surprising if I say this book also glued me to the floor. In the best way possible. This book contains literally everything. History, morals, rules, system. And last but not least a story of a human being's life. With everything. All the happy times and sad times. All the friends and foes. Every single source of motivation and reasons to go forward, no matter what. 

Noticing this though, is hard work. You need to pay attention and you need to have an open mind. I mean it would be good if you could find the real person behind or right next to the criminal, yakuza persona wouldn't it?

As for me this last aspect meant the most. That he could introduce the person not just the yakuza. Not to mention the fact that I actually could here the voice of the author while reading the book. Yeah I may or may not listened to his true crime podcast many times. Anyways, in my honest opinion this book was also layered.

I highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in the topic. The history of the Japanese underworld. Focusing on one person especially. A certain person in a big system. For me it was an enjoyable read.
