Olvasás közben millió meg egy dolog jutott eszembe. Az első az volt, kissé ironikusan, hogy szeretem, mikor a szerző utólag ír előzménykötetet az univerzumához, hogy abban úgy nagyjából az alapjait rúgja fel az általa megteremtett világnak. Aztán egy huszárvágással ez a mozzanat a történet vége felé magyarázatot kap. Szóval a könyv mégiscsak belesimul az Éhezők Viadala univerzumába. 

Öszintén sajnáltam volna, ha valamiért nem így történik, mert szerkezetileg, történetileg és írásmódjában ez a könyv meglepően jó. De tényleg. Kifejezetten érdekelt, amit olvastam, és maga a történet olyan stílusban volt megírva, aminek köszönhetően igencsak sebesen pörögtek a lapok, és mikor le kellett tennem a könyvet, alig vártam, hogy újra kézbe vehessem, és elmerülhessek benne.

A történet, mint az sokak számára ismert, az Éhezők Viadala trilógia fő antagonistájának Coriolanus Snow-nak (később Snow elnök) fiatalkoráról szól. Egy a háború szörnyűségei által nyomorba juttatott, de a látszatra még mindig adó egykor gazdag család igencsak eszes és intelligens leszármazottaként Coriolanus lehetőséget kap arra, hogy a 10. Éhezők Viadalán mentorként vegyen részt. Az egyik legesélytelenebb kiválasztott mentoraként kezdi meg a viadalt, az életére nézve viszont ez a találkozás még elmondhatatlan következményekkel jár.

A történet nagy részében én még változó intenzitással, de kedveltem is a fiatal Coriolanus karakterét. Persze nem mindenben értettem vele egyet, de egészében véve szerethető karakternek látszott, és elképzelni nem tudtam, hogy mégis mi késztette rá, hogy olyan emberré váljon, amilyennek az eredeti trilógiában megismertük. Sajnos nem számoltam a büszkeség és a becsvágy jelen esetben kivételesen extrém, személyiségromboló erejével. Tudtam, hogy milyen karakter Snow, de ekkora és ilyen hirtelen pálfordulásra nem számítottam. Nagyon mellbe vágott az utolsó cirka 100 oldal. Borzasztó volt látni, hogy a szeretet tiszta érzését hogy mocskolja be villámgyorsan a becsvágy és hogy változik meg az embernek a másikról alkotott véleménye ilyen gyökeresen, gyakorlatilag pillanatok alatt. 

A vége ennek a könyvnek egész egyszerűen traumatikus. Olyan mélyen gondolkodóba ejtettek a történtek és mindennek a sebessége, hogy alig bírtam elaludni aznap éjjel, mikor elfogytak a könyv utolsó oldalai. Nem tudok rá jobb szót, tényleg traumatizált a vége. Az érdeklődésemet a készülő új történet iránt viszont felkeltette. Ha igaz, bepillantást nyerhetünk majd Haymitch viadalába, ami eleve egy jó témának ígérkezik.

Nem igazán tudom, hogy milyen szűkebb célközönségnek ajánlanám most ezt a könyvet. Akárhonnan nézzük, szerintem, ha az ember, akár a filmeken kesresztül, de ismeri az eredeti trilógiát, ennek is érdemes egy esélyt adnia. Velem speciel etette magát.

Millions of thoughts ran through my mind while reading this book. The first of the many was a little saracstic to be honest. I was like I love it when authors write prequels to their stories after the original books (in this case a trilogy) got published. More often than not they tend to just kick their whole universe up in the air, destroying the foundations of said universes. I though that was the case with this story as well. Thankfully the story itself gave an explanation why this move was necessay in here. And so the story just fits snuggly right into the universe of the original Hunger Games trilogy. 

Truth to be told, I would have been very sad if we hadn't gotten an explanation because this story was surprisingly great. Really! The worldbuilding, the story and the way of writing were pretty awesome. I was truly intrigued by the story and there was that spark in the writing that made me turn the pages one after another. When I was forced to put down the book I couldn't wait to pick it up again and dive headfirst into the story. 

As many of you probably know the story is about, the young Coriolanus Snow (later President Snow) who was one of the main antagonists of the original Hunger Games trilogy. Young Coriolanus was the offspring of a noble family. They lost their fortune during the war but they still try to make everyone believe they are wealthy. Coriolanus is a very smart and intelligent young man and thus he gets a chance to be a mentor in the thenth Hunger Games. He needs to help one of the tributes with the lowest chances. Little does he know about the changes this relationsip will bring into his life. 

Surprisingly I liked the young Snow in the majority of the story, even though the intensity was changing from part to part. I didn't agree with every move of his of course but all in all I liked his character and I couldn't even start to think of how he became such a negative character who he was in the original trilogy. Sadly I haven't considered the destuctive effects of pride and ambition. Both are extremely high in Snow's personality. I knew what kind of character he was but I couldn't imagine such a complete and fast turn in his personality. I was literally floored by the end of the book. It was horrible to see ambition make such a beautiful feeling as love so dirty in a short period of time. 

The end of this book is simply traumatic. I was so deep in thought about it I hardly slept a wink that night when I finished the book. I don't have any more effective words. I was traumatized. But my curiosity about the new Hunger Games book just skyrocketed. If the rumors are true we will be part of Haymitch's Game which is an exciting topic as it is. 

I don't really know who I should recommend this book to. Basically I think if you are familiar with the original trilogy even if just by the movies, this book worth a chance as well. As for me, I just ate the whole thing up.
