| Hungarian edition of The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami |
Tekintve, hogy a mágikus realizmus egyik legjelesebb képviselőjéről beszélünk (gyakorlatilag az egyetlenről, aki számomra fogyaszthathatóvá tudja tenni a műfajt), nem hiszem, hogy rá kell mutatni arra, hogy a történetek nagy részében van valami valóságtól elrugaszkodott. Épp ezért annyira jó olvasni őket. A titok, hogy nem kell kényszeresen próbálgatni a mágia nélküli realizmus talajára rángatni az olvasottakat. Az írás stílusa ezért olyan páratlan. A köznapi élethelyzeteket tudja mágikussá varázsolni. Mondhatnánk azt is, hogy valószerűtlenné.
A karakterek pedig mind olyan életet élnek, amilyenre olykor a mindennapokban megfáradt ember is vágyik. Nagyjából semmi gondjuk nincs a világon. Persze nem élnek kifejezetten felelősség nélkül, de nem is veszik túl komolyan az életet.
Talán feltűnő, hogy általánosságban beszélek. Ez így is van, de mivel ezek a jellemvonások általában igazak, így állnak a kötetben szereplő novellákra is. Éppen ezért tartom jó ötletnek, ha valaki egy novelláskötettel kezdi a szerzővel való ismerkedést. A novellák rövidek, épp ezért könnyen feldolgozhatók, el lehet dönteni, hogy tetszik-e az adott személynek az író stílusa vagy sem.
Persze nem minden novelláskötet azonos kvalitású, de ez egy kifejezetten jó kezdet. És a fordítás is jó, néhány nevetségesen rossz félrefordítástól eltekintve (a hot pot az nem forró fazék!).
Én jó szívvel ajánlom mindenkinek, aki szeretne elkezdeni ismerkedni a szerző műveivel. Ez a kötet remek kiskapu a világába.

The first ever book written by Murakami Haruki I've ever read. After this very first experience I got to understand something very important. There is an author I could turn to when and if my mental state requires it. When I need to slow down and calm down. Ever since Murakami Haruki is that author to me.
Considering that we are talking about the flagbearer of the magical realism genre (practically the only author who can convince me to consume magical realism) I don't think I have to point out that most of these stories are beyond realism. That's exactly why it feels good to read them. The secret is that no one should try to drag these short stories down to the earth of not so magical realism. This is why the way of writing is so amazing. He can turn the events of grey weekdays to something colorful and magical. To something absurd if we can say so.
His characters live everyone's dream life, I might add. I won't say they are entierly irresponsible, but they certainly don't take life too seriously.
You may noticed I'm talking in general. That's true, but all of the above is true in general so it is true to these short stories as well, which got published in this collection. That's why I think it is a good idea to get to know his art through his short stories. The stories are short (surprise!) and it makes it easy to work ourselves through them. Anyone can check them out and decide if his style is for them or not.
Naturally not all of his short story collections are at the same quality. But this one could be a good start. I highly recommend it. It's a very unique gate to his world.
