Két olyan dolog ez, ami nálam tud nagyon nagy buktató lenni. És, hát félig-meddig be is teljesítette magát a jóslat. Nagyon nehezen indult el a könyv. Az első 100 oldal, ami gyakorlatilag a könyv negyede mondhatni csupán előkészíti a terepet a cselekménynek. A későbbi események megértéséhez elengedtehetlen ugyan ez a "bevezetés" mégis azt éreztem, hogy a regény teljes hosszához képest indokolatlanul elnyújtott. Ha azonban ezen túllendülünk, akkor valami lehengerlően hősies, és gyomorszorítóan aggasztó dologgal találjuk szemben magunkat, ami engem is pontosan úgy tartott ülve a székem szélén, mint annyi más olvasót, akinek az értékelésébe beleolvastam.
Stefania és a húga, Helena hősiessége ugyanis példaértékű. Ők a nem is annyira hétköznapi hősei a Vészkorszaknak. Ők, akik saját életüket kockára téve óvtak meg annyi más lelket. Szenvedtek el annyi mindent. Kijár a tisztelet a nem is annyira hétköznapi hősöknek és megérdemlik, hogy az ő történetüket is elmeséljék.
Sharon Cameronnak ez a regény, mint műfaj adottságaihoz igazodva is sikerült. Ha meg is jelenít olyan eseményket, amiket Stefania nem láthatott, azok is a valóságból merítkeznek. Sajnos. Emelem kalapom az író kutató munkája és alapossága előtt. Köszönet érte, hogy elmesélte Stefi és Hela történetét, ezzel is egy kicsit más megvilágításba helyezve a Vészkorszakot.
A könyvet mindenképpen megéri kézbe venni, megismerni egy élettörténet embertelenül nehéz szakaszát, és példát venni róla. Őszintén ez a könyv megérdemli a hype-ot és a félig fiktív jelleg sem fogja olvasás közben annyira foglalkoztatni az olvasót. Garantáltan mással lesz elfoglalva a történet megismerése során.

The book I read during Holocaust Remembrance Week in 2025. I discovered this book around the same time last year, when many readers read it during the same week. So I thought it deserves a chance from me as well. I didn't pay attention to two cardinal things though. The extreme overhype around this book and the fact that fiction and reality mix in the story. Since this is not a memoir but a novel.
These are two aspects which could turn a big no-no for me. And as it turned out something like that happened.The beginning of this book was very slow. The first 100 pages which is practically the first quarter of the book just pave the way to the real story. It is a necesary prologue-like part but compared to the full lenght of the story it's way too long. But when we get over these initial pages we see something heroic as well as worrisome. It made me sit at the edge of my seat the same as I read in many readers' reviews before.
Stefania's and her little sister's Helena's heroism is something to take as an example. They are and the people like them are the not so ordinary heroes of the Holocaust. Them, who risked their lives in every hour to save many souls. They suffered a lot to do this. Let's respect these not so ordinary heroes. They deserve people to know their stories. These stories desrvre to be told.
Sharon Cameron understood her assignment and did a great job despite the novel form of the story. She does talk about events Stefania couldn't witness but those are atrocities which actually happened as well. Unfortunately. Hats off of her and the work she put into this book. Thank you for telling Stefi's and Hela's story, putting the Holocaust in a little bit different light again.
I think those who are interested, should pick up this book. Read about this life, a slice of it full of obstacles and fear but light and hope as well. Take her as an example. Honestly this book deserves the hype and the fictive parts won't bother you too much either. Granted you won't care about those, reading the story.
